Faculty Seminars

Since 2004, more than 120 seminary professors, presidents and educators have engaged each other on the use of multifaith education in the formation of a religious leader through Auburn's annual faculty development seminars. Faculty have come from the widest array of evangelical, mainline, and nondenominational Protestant seminaries, Catholic seminaries, and Rabbinical schools from every movement, as well as from emergent Muslim and Buddhist seminary-like institutions.

Next Seminar: December 1, 2011, hosted by Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, CA
To request an invitation, email Rabbi Justus Baird at jbaird@auburnseminary.org

The agenda for the day-long seminar on December 1 has been emailed to attendees. Please contact us if you did not receive one. Participants may wish to prepare for the seminar in the following ways:

  1. Browse the findings of the Auburn study "Beyond World Religions: the State of Multifaith Education in American Theological Schools"
  2. Browse the evaluation report, "Educating Relgious Leaders for a Multi-religious World: Outcomes and Learning"
  3. Read the recent article in the Colloquy magazine of the Association of Theological Schools, "Reaching Beyond Ourselves: ATS Schools Respond to Multifaith Context." (begins on page 4 of the Fall 2011 issue)
  4. Reflect on the different ways that students at your institution learn about and encounter other faiths - in the classroom, through field work, travel seminars, dialogue programs, etc.

Recent Faculty Seminars

  • Spring 2011: Bay Area, CA, hosted by the Graduate Theological Union in Oakland
  • Fall 2010: Chicago, IL, hosted by the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago
  • 2004-2010: New York, NY

Each seminar features collegial discussion about the role of learning about other faiths in the formation process of a religious leader, reflections on the pedagogy on teaching other faiths, and results from the recently released Auburn study on the state of multifaith education in American theological schools. These seminars are generously supported by the Henry Luce Foundation.

Learn more about the state of the field through the recently published report Beyond World Religions and tell us if you'd like to hear more about upcoming faculty seminars by contacting Rabbi Justus Baird.
