New York Institute for the Laity

The New York Institute for the Laity provides a series of theological education courses designed for Presbyterian Elders, Deacons, and laypeople.

Courses are open to all who are interested, but the core courses are intended to fulfill the training requirements for becoming a Commissioned Lay Pastor (CLP) in the Presbytery of New York City.  Those seeking to become a CLP elsewhere should check that presbytery’s training requirements to ensure that this coursework is appropriate.

Courses generally meet from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm over six Saturday mornings and are offered in the fall and in the spring.

The core courses, offered on a rotating basis, focus on the following subjects:
  • • Introduction to the Bible
  • • Pastoral Care
  • • Presbyterian Polity
  • • Reformed Theology
  • • Reformed Worship and Sacraments
  • • Introduction to Preaching
  • Foundations of Christian Education

    • Course begins March 2011 -- Click above for more info.
