Each December, while South Africans are enjoying the heat of summer, Face to Face |Faith to Faith holds a regional five-day intensive program for Muslim, Jewish, and Christian teens from Cape Town. This past December, Face to Face South Africa hosted 37 teens from five disadvantaged schools in Cape Town. "South Africa has many intractable regional issues—prejudice and stereotyping, xenophobia, poverty, religious fundamentalism, and HIV. Face to Face| Faith to Faith gives teens who participate a chance to talk and learn about these issues and begin to address them across lines of difference," said Natalie Simons-Arendse, the regional leader for Face to Face in Cape Town. When they arrived at the summer camp, participants were given a journal to reflect on their experiences and a t-shirt that read “Decisions Determine Destiny.” The teens learn communication skills, likeintentional listening, and engage in interfaith and intrafaith dialogue. In one experiential program, they must work together to build a raft to cross a river. Reconciliation Day, a national holiday that fosters reconciliation among South Africa’s diverse ethnic groups, fell during the intensive this year. Participants walked from St. George’s Cathedral to a synagogue and a mosque. Along the way they heard from a Muslim politician, a Christian Black South African who was a leader during Apartheid, and Justice Albie Sacks, a Jewish former High Court justice, who told the group how he came to forgive the person who was ordered to assassinate him for his role in the anti-Apartheid movement. They concluded the day by spending time with a Dutch man who has lived with HIV for 25 years. Natalie summed up the experience in this way: "This summer intensive has become a powerful tradition for us in South Africa. It means more teens experience Face to Face, and it gives our alumni a chance to exercise leadership. This local summer intensive is the perfect complement to our Face to Face|Faith to Faith yearlong program."
